Mid-Major Softball Top 25 Poll was released late Sunday evening, and it holds good news for a pair of Mountain West Conference teams.
San Diego State will begin the year ranked eighth among mid-majors in the poll, which is conducted by a consortium of knowledgeable college softball fans from around the country. In 2012, the poll voters consist of bloggers who routinely cover the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference.
At No. 19 in the rankings is UNLV. It is the second poll in which the Rebels received preseason recognition, after earning a spot in last week's ESPN.com rankings. The Aztecs have received votes in all three preseason polls, including the NFCA Top 25.
Among mid-majors, Louisiana-Lafayette is ranked first, while future Mountain West member Fresno State is tied for the No. 2 spot with defending Conference USA champ Tulsa. Fourth-ranked Fordham sits just ahead of former Mountain West member BYU, which is No. 5.
UMass is ranked sixth, followed by 2011 NCAA Super Regional team Houston in seventh. San Diego State is tied with the WAC's Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine in the eighth spot. Rounding out the top 10 is New Mexico State.
