Opening day results - Thursday, Feb. 6
The season got underway today with Utah State, San Jose State, San Diego State and New Mexico in action. The Aztecs won a pair of thrillers, needing big comebacks late in victories over Appalachian State and Oregon State. All MW teams will get underway Friday. Fresno State, which opens vs. 8th-ranked Oregon at 12:30 pm PT in Tempe Friday, still has not departed for its trip as of 8:15 pm Thursday, following major flight delays.
Utah State 8, Southern Utah 0
San Jose State 11, Creighton 2
Idaho State 10, Utah State 7
San Diego State 7, Appalachian State 6 (8 innings) - Highly-touted freshman pitcher Erica Romero made her Aztecs debut and gave up six hits and four runs in four innings. The Aztecs trailed 6-3 in the seventh, and managed to send the game to extras on a 2-run homer by Kayla Bufardeci. Appalachian State had 12 hits against three SDSU pitchers, with Danielle O'Toole grabbing the win.
San Diego State 6, Oregon State 3 - SDSU scored five times in the sixth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit. Home runs from Patrice Jackson (a solo shot) and Kaitlin Connors (2-run HR) highlighted the sixth as the Aztecs took advantage of two OSU errors and three walks in that frame alone.
7th-ranked Arizona State 9, New Mexico 0 (5 innings) - The Sun Devils hit three homers and pushed seven runs across in the fourth inning in a run-rule rout in Tempe.
