TUESDAY: Aggies beat Lobos in Rio Grande Rivalry game
In the lone game involving a Mountain West softball team Tuesday, the opening game of two this season in the Rio Grande Rivalry series went to visiting New Mexico State, which beat New Mexico 12-6 in Albuquerque. NMSU improved to 24-11 overall, while the Lobos (18-14) saw their 2-game win streak snapped. The Aggies jumped to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second before UNM got on the board with a 2-run home run by Jasmine Casados in the third. New Mexico twice fought off a run-rule defeat, scoring a pair of runs in the fifth when it trailed 10-2, and two more in the sixth when the Lobos were down 12-4. Down to its last strike in the sixth, New Mexico got an RBI single from Casados to make it 12-5. Mariah Rimmer, coming off a 2 home run performance Sunday at Utah State, then hit an RBI single to make it a 12-6 game, but the Lobos were unable to complete the comeback. Starter Lisa Rodrigues took the loss for UNM, which had 11 hits to 17 for the Aggies. Casados had three hits and three RBI for the Lobos. The two rivals will meet again in Las Cruces on April 14.
