WEDNESDAY: No. 13 Arizona scores 24 runs in sweep of UNLV

The first two of 10 games this week for Mountain West softball teams against ranked opponents didn't go so well on Wednesday.  In the lone games played today, UNLV suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of 13th-ranked Arizona, falling 8-3 in game one and 16-6 in five innings in game two.  In Wednesday's opener, the Rebels had just two hits in the game, but both were home runs.  A 2-run shot to center by Garie Blando in the third inning came after a walk and briefly gave UNLV a 2-1 lead.  Arizona took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with a 4-run frame.  In the seventh, a solo homer by Francesca Foti completed the scoring.  In the nightcap, it was all Wildcats as Arizona scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Rebels starter Kwyn Cooper lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing all eight earned runs on eight hits in the inning.  Morgan Ettinger took the loss in the opener.  The Mountain West has eight remaining games this week against ranked teams, with Fresno State accounting for half of that total.  The Bulldogs play four Top 25 powers on Saturday and Sunday alone, including these 13th-ranked Wildcats.  Fresno State faces No. 9 Baylor in addition to Arizona on Sunday, and the Bulldogs face the toughest possible Saturday with back-to-back matchups vs. unbeaten and No. 1 Florida (21-0), followed by No. 2 Oregon.  Tomorrow, San Jose State faces the top-ranked Gators in the first of three Top 25 opponents for the Spartans over three days.
