TUESDAY: Spartans shocked at home by Santa Clara

In the only softball game involving a Mountain West team Tuesday, San Jose State was stunned at home in a 7-6 loss to Santa Clara.  Allison Lang started and took the loss, going 3 1/3 innings and giving up eight hits as the Broncos stormed to a 7-0 lead.  SJSU got back in it, scoring six runs between the fourth and sixth innings before Santa Clara reliever Micaela Vierra retired the Spartans in order in the seventh.  SCU snapped a 3-game losing streak (the Broncos were swept in a 3-game series against Pacific last weekend) and won for just the 28th time in a 99-game series dominated by the Spartans.  Santa Clara (15-32) entered the week with an RPI of 228, a team batting average of .259, and had scored seven or more runs in a game only five times all season.  Erin Rodriguez led the Spartans with two hits, including a double, and two RBI. San Jose State, which has now lost two straight games, had 12 hits, 10 of which were singles.  The seven runs were the most SCU had scored in a game in more than a month.
