Tuesday news and notes around the Mountain West

Conference play begins Thursday with four league series.  San Diego State opens on the road in Las Vegas at UNLV, New Mexico will be at home in Albuquerque to face Utah State, San Jose State travels to Fort Collins to meet Colorado State, and Nevada is set to host Boise State in Reno ... In the lone non-conference game of the week, Fresno State fell 5-0 on the road at Cal State Fullerton.  The Titans made it a clean sweep of the top four projected Mountain West teams this season, adding the Bulldogs to a list of victims that already included San Diego State, San Jose State and New Mexico.  Fullerton was playing its 18th home game of the season and won for the 11th time in its last 12 games.  The Titans have defeated nationally-ranked Oklahoma and Arizona State, in addition to the Bulldogs, who showed up at No. 23 and No. 25 in the two national polls this morning ... The Mountain West named its Player and Pitcher of the Week honors this morning and the awards went to Holly Reinke (Pitcher) of Colorado State and Jennifer Purcell (Player) of Nevada.
